Urban Legends and Hoaxes on the Internet

You know these e-mails. Every now and again they surface, and the person sending it to you swears that it is true. Sometimes we know better; sometimes not. Here are a couple Internet based urban legends and hoaxes – we’re pretty sure they’re not true J

Bill 602P: Federal Bill 602P was supposed to impose a .05 cent tax on every email sent. There is no such thing. This is at least 4 years old – but recently made another round through e-mail boxes across the nation.

Prayer Requests: Some of these are chain letters, requesting money, others merely request to be forwarded onward. Please don’t worry about sending the e-mail out to six of your friends – most of these are years old.

Andy Rooney e-mail about political correctness: It was false. Kind of funny, but false.

Missing Child – Penny Brown: There are many missing children, but this one is a hoax.

AOL Giveaways: Microsoft, Netscape, Intel – it’s a wonder that Time Warner has any money left! Many giveaway e-mails say they are written by lawyers who swear it’s true. Do we have to answer that one?

Royalty of Small Nations want to make you rich: I hope that no one would ever consider giving their bank account number and routing information to someone claiming to want to give you millions of dollars. This one comes back again and again.

The Tourist: Pictures of this guy supposedly on top of the twin towers on the morning of 9/11 made it’s way around the Internet. Not funny use of Photoshop. Pictures of the same guy in many 20th and 21st century disasters, including riding in the back of the car with JFK, in a lifeboat in front of the sinking Titanic, and my favorite, the tourist back on the twin towers with the Sta-Puff Marshmallow Man menacing the building; okay, we needed to laugh at something at the time.
