Virus Protection

Are you running your computer without virus protection? Is your software expired or outdated? It’s a bad idea to even open an email without your virus software running.

Here are some basic tips when choosing virus software:

  • Does it work with your e-mail program?
  • Does it scan attachments to e-mail?
  • Does it scan downloads that are saved to your computer?

Norton Antivirus currently detects and removes over 64,000 viruses. It seems like new threats are discovered each and everyday.

You can protect yourself by purchasing a good virus program, and following some simple rules to protect yourself:

  • Configure your e-mail program so that the e-mail preview is turned off.
  • Never open an attachment from someone you don’t know.
  • Only open an attachment from someone you do know if your virus software is running and up-to-date.
  • Don’t open e-mails that look like spam. Don’t be fooled by subject lines that are meant to engage you – HTML e-mails are not considered downloads, but they are linking out to web servers on the Internet when you open them.
  • Don’t ever believe an e-mail, even from your best friend, that tells you to delete files on your computer. It is believed that there are more virus hoaxes than viruses. Do a search on Symantec’s site for the subject line of the email or some keywords contained in the text and see if it’s a hoax. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html
  • If you start to experience strange behavior on your computer, like your Antivirus icon disappears out of the system tray (bottom right hand corner of the screen) as soon as you start the program, get some help.

Downloads and Sites that may cause problems:

If someone in your household downloads music or programs frequently from the Internet, you need protection on your computer, and you should run virus scans frequently. Some sites are more problematic than others – sites where someone might get cheat codes for games often piggyback viruses or Trojan horses along with the codes.

Trojan horses are programs that are downloaded or come on a disk. Your system may be infected; just waiting for a certain date or time that will unlock the program. Some are very minor annoyances but others can be devastating. Most virus programs don’t pickup Trojan horses. There are security programs available that will be able to detect this type of problem.

 Internet Security – Privacy Protection:

Sometimes just visiting a Web site can plant a “cookie” in your computer that could be defined as “spyware”. Many spyware programs also can be residing in your Windows Registry. Conceivably, spyware programs can report back to a Web server, somewhere on the Internet, your keystrokes including usernames and passwords used on Web sites. Use a simple program such as Adaware so remove spyware from your system.

Simple rules should be used when surfing or opening your e-mail that will save you countless headaches later on.
